Why do we neglect the bond length in He2 when discussing the trends shown in Figure 16.20?

Because the bond in He2 is not a chemical bond, but rather a van der Waals bond, it will be longer than a normal chemical bond. Therefore, it is reasonable to neglect the bond length in He2 in discussing the trends shown in Figure 13.15.
