In the determinant-selection model, differences in responsiveness are explained by the ability or inability of MHC to bind peptide. In the holes-in-the repertoire model, differences in responsiveness are explained by the presence or absence of specific T cells. T cells that respond to certain peptides may be deleted during selection on certain MHC backgrounds.
