ANS: I. Reactive oxygen intermediates (ROIs) are generated by enzymes in phagocytes, such as phagocyte oxidase and myeloperoxidase. They have unpaired electrons in their outer orbitals and induce oxidative damage to cellular membranes and DNA. ROIs can kill microbes, but they also damage host cells.
