After recovering from surgery he will not need extra calories for healing but he will need extra calories for catch-up growth. What should his caloric and protein intake be at this time?

I would determine his caloric intake as in the answer to question 10 . According to the RDAs, the protein requirement for a normal infant PG's age is 16 g per day. Since PG is about half the size he should be, about
8 g seems a reasonable estimate. According to an article reported by Seashore and modified in Pediatric Nutrition in Chronic Diseases and Developmental Disorders, his protein requirement should be 1.2 g per kg. This comes out to be 9 g. For catch-up growth additional protein would be required. Depending on tolerance and the information obtained in question 10, his requirement would probably be 1.5 or closer to 1.7 g/kg/day. The amount of detail required by the student to explain this will depend on the instructor.
