When using the speaker telephone feature, why do you suppose it is common courtesy to alert the person on the other end of the call to the presence of others in the room (other than for HIPAA reasons)?

It is common courtesy to alert the person on the other end of the call to the presence of others so that the caller is aware of all people present in the conversation.
