Recent estimates of the number of genes in the human genome range from 20,000-25,000 genes, and one analyses suggests that humans may have fewer than 20,000 genes. However, the number of different kinds of mRNA molecules is reported to be much greater. How do you reconcile these two different observations?

For many genes, the RNA can be spliced in more than one way. This allows the production of different, related mRNAs and proteins from one gene.
