Answer to #3

Drugs can produce side effects that impact various mechanisms of how the body takes in and uses nutrients, including by limiting food intake. Ways that drug interactions alter food intake include altering the appetite, interfering with taste or smell, inducing nausea or vomiting, interfering with oral functioning, or causing sores or inflammation in the mouth.

Answer to #6

Health care professionals should be aware that some patients are more vulnerable than others to adverse effects from drugs. This category includes the populations that rarely participate in clinical trials that determine product safety: pregnant and lactating women, children, and people with medical conditions that are not the main focus of the study. In these groups, side effects may be discovered only after a drug has been marketed. Children may react in different ways to drugs than adults do, and the appropriate dosage for their age and size is often unknown. Also, limited data are available on drug safety in older adults. Elderly people with chronic diseases that require multiple medications are especially susceptible to adverse effects. They are also more likely to have impaired function of the liver or kidneys-the two organs critical for metabolizing drugs and eliminating drugs from the body.
