E. coli does not contain the genes necessary to produce indigo, but with a genetically modified plasmid it is made capable of an entirely foreign metabolic pathway. Once all of the genes necessary for this pathway are contained within a plasmid, E. coli can be grown at industrial scales of 500,000 liters or more to cheaply produce bulk quantities of indigo for dying materials such as blue jeans.
