The molecular formula for glucose is C6H12O6. What would be the molecular formula for a polymer made by linking ten glucose molecules together by dehydration reactions? And how do you come up with the answer?

In the dehydration reaction 1 H2O will be lost each time. You are linking 10 glucose molecules together by dehydration reaction therfore you will lose 20 Hydrogen and 10 Oxygen.

C6H12O6 x 10 = C60H120O60 (Carbon 60 Hydrogen 120 Oxygen 60)

lets subtract now what we lost in the dehydration reactions

C60H120O60 - H20 - O10 = C60H100O50 (Carbon 50 Hydrogen 100 Oxygen 50)

I did not do much explaining in the above answer.

When a bond forms between two monomers, each monomer contributes part of the water molecule that is lost: One molecule provides a hydroxyl group (-OH), while the other provides a hydrogen (-H).This reaction can be repeated as monomers are added to the chain one by one, making a polymer. The dehydration process
is facilitated by enzymes, specialized macromolecules that speed up chemical reactions in cells.

I sure wish I could edit my posts. I did not catch the typo which should be ( Carbon 60 Hydrogen 100 oxygen 50).

Hey Rit727, okay...

Rightwards Arrow C6H12O6 is one molecule.

Add 10 more molecules, so X10

Rightwards Arrow C60H120O60 is one molecule.

A dehydration reaction: -H2O * 10

Rightwards Arrow -H20O10

Remember that if we had 10 glucose molecules, the glucoses on the outside do not lose a hydrogen because they are not involved in the reaction, so add 2 more hydrogens and 1 oxygen.

Rightwards Arrow -H18O9

Add these to the total:

C60H120O60 - H18O9 = C60H102O51
