Parents of children with disabilities have formed advocacy groups and called media attention to the needs of their children. Groups such as United Cerebral Palsy, founded in 1949, and the National Association for Retarded Children, founded in 1950, were among the early pioneers influencing and shaping special education. These parent groups are a strong voice for the rights of their children as they question traditional practices, lobby for increased research to address their children's disorders, and seek assistance through legislation and litigation.
