Since security management is a multifaceted occupation, the roles of the security manager are varied. The security manager simultaneously assumes managerial, administrative, preventive, and investigative roles and responsibilities. As a manager, the security professional is responsible for selecting, training, scheduling, supervising, motivating, and evaluating security personnel. The manager is responsible for issues related to productivity, morale, compensation, well-being, and professional growth of security personnel as well as safety and security indoctrination and training of all employees. Employee attitudes and expectations toward authority are changing. Workforce diversity is commonplace and workplace violence has become a major issue. Organizations are also requiring higher productivity and improvements in the quality of output. In the role of an administrator, the security professional is responsible for the establishment of security's organizational vision, mission, goals, and objectives. The security administrator must create a vision for the security operation as well as administer the day to-day operations of the department. This involves planning, financial control, public relations, and community liaison activities. Security managers have become risk managers. They must anticipate, analyze, and protect an organization from virtually every conceivable threat, from liability to terrorism. As a primary prevention officer of an organization, the security manager is ultimately responsible and accountable for prevention of loss from any source. It is the manager's responsibility to recognize and appraise hazards, and initiate action to reduce or remove the risk of loss. A high number of arrests for crimes committed on the premises are not a good measure for security program effectiveness, since it suggests that there is a problem with existing security measures and practices. The measure of the best security program is how many crimes and incidents are prevented.
