The proper design of security lighting can be complex. The amount of illumination, which is the quantity of light shining directly on an object, depends on the purpose of the lighting and what is being illuminated.  As a general rule, artificial lighting should provide even coverage of the assessment zone (the area under observation), allowing for no dark areas which could serve as an area for concealment. Lighting should also be used continuously, and in some cases it should not just be used at night. Artificial lighting should be used in any situation where natural light is not sufficient to effectively monitor an area, or where the contrast between lighting/darkness creates a safety issue for employees. Generally, complex tasks and smaller and darker objects that need to be observed require more light to properly surveil than larger ones. In operations areas, such as workspaces, the amount of lighting and brightness required is usually much higher than for security purposes. Protective lighting must be of sufficient brightness to permit adequate human or technological surveillance, illuminate exit routes, identify hazards to prevent personal injury, and create a psychological barrier to unauthorized intrusion. Protective lighting must also be positioned to avoid glare that might reduce visibility for security personnel and others with authorized access to a facility. Lighting standards must also comply with industry standards, which are established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and security organizations.
