Suggested Responses: Students should define the standards movement as a national initiative to identify the specific skills children need to succeed in school and to promote and assess these in a systematic way. They should explain that the standards movement has led to an increased focus on classroom goals and set standards, and, in some cases, academic skills like math and reading. Students should explain that critics feel this has caused a decreased focus on social development and the pursuit of children's interests, to the disadvantage of students, and that it places increased stress on teachers.
