Sykes and Matza's techniques of neutralization theory are usually applied to delinquent behavior. However, one could see the application of the theory to adult criminality. Give examples of how adults would justify or neutralize their criminal behavior.

• Cheating on income tax returns
o Claim that everybody does it
o Deny injury (the government won't miss it)
o Condemning the condemners (politicians cheat on their taxes)
• Intimate partner violence
o Metaphor of the ledger (I've been good about not being violent so now I'm entitled to be violent once in a while)
o Denying responsibility (my father abused my mother so that is what I learned to do)
o Denying injury (I did not really hurt her)
o Denying the victim (it is her fault — if she had had dinner ready on time, I would not have done this)
