A quadratic function is defined by f(x) = 3x^2 + 4x - 2. A linear function is defined by g(x) = mx - 5. What values of the slope of the line would make it a tangent to the parabola?

Hi Emily, just out of curiosity, are we allowed to use calculus to do this problem?

Without it... as a test run, I found a generic solution as:

m (slope) = 3a + 4 + 3/a... subbing in -1 into a gives us -2 for the slope. subbing in +1 gives us 10 as the slope, but that was with the aid of a graph.

Update: I think I know how it's done without graphs.

I'll update you in the morning...
