1. In studying a populations of lizards, scientists sampled 47 sections of a habitat. Each section was 29 km2 . the density of lizards was 1/3.8 km2

a) calculate the size of the lizard population living in the area
b) What assumption did you make regarding the distribution of this populations throughout its habitat when calculating your results?

2. White spruce may compete with lodgepole for light and living space. Eventually, white spruce may take over.
a) what kind of competition is occurring?
b) provide two reason white spruce may out-compete lodgepole pine

It is Intra and Interspecific - the latter being among individuals of different species, the former being among individuals of the same species. You can also have direct and indirect competition within Intra and Interspecific competition.

So, for example, in interspecific: Two species of fish which compete for the same food resources in a pond; or two species of warbler that eat the same type of caterpillars.

Intraspecific: Two oak trees growing next to each other competing for light, water, nutrients, etc. Or a colony of diamondback rattlesnakes living in the desert competing for food.
