Not sure but i read thet lodgepole pine are light are shade intolerance while spruce are shade tolerance plant. the other reasons is that when lodgepole pine seeds germinate the seeds grow very tall quickly that they end competing for resources and space while white spruce is since they can grow under shaded tree and are classified to be a k selected species thats why they are good competitors than lodgepole pine which will die during density thinning.
