The Chinese government has passed legislation requiring that new coal-fired plants install flue gas desulfurization (FGD) equipment (long used in the U.S., Japan, and the EU). If properly maintained and operated, this equipment will eliminate 90-95 percent of the sulfur. All existing coal-fired plants in China are required to be “retrofitted” with the same equipment by 2010.In 2002, the Chinese government ordered SOx emissions reduced 10 percent by 2005. Instead, they increased by 27 percent. How much faith do you have in the FGD requirement being enacted?
