The plates of a parallel-plate capacitor are maintained with constant voltage by a battery as they are pulled apart. During this process, the amount of charge on the plates must:

A) increase
B) decrease
C) remain constant
D) either increase or decrease. There is no way to tell from the information given

Thanks!

The capacitance decreases as the plates are pulled apart. (In fact C is inversely proportional to plate separation,d - see link.)

C = Q/V so V = Q/C

Since V is held constant and C decreases, Q must also decrease (so Q/C remains the same value). Answer B.
