In the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, vestigial wings and hairy body are produced by two recessive genes located in different chromosomes. The normal alleles, long wings and hairless body, are dominant. What are the genotype and phenotype of F1 progeny obtained from a cross between a vestigial-winged, hairy male and a normal, homozygous female. If the F1 from this cross are permitted to mate randomly among themselves, what phenotypic ratio would be expected in the F2 generation?

Since the genes are located on different chromosomes, there will be no linkage, and the alleles will assort independently.

W = wild type, dominant, long wings
w = recessive, vestigial wings
H = wild type, dominant, hairless body
h = recessive, hairy body

vestigial-winged hairy male x normal female
wwhh x WWHH
F1 progeny all genotype WwHh
all phenotypically normal (long wings, hairless body)

WwHh x WwHh
F2 progeny
genotypes                           phenotypes
1 WWHH                             normal
2 WWHh                             normal
1 WWhh                              long wings, hairy body
2 WwHH                             normal
4 WwHh                              normal
2 Wwhh                               long wings, hairy body
1 ww HH                             vestigial wings, hairless body
2 wwHh                               vestigial wings, hairless body
1 wwhh                                vestigial wings, hairy body

out of 16 individuals you would expect
9 normal
3 long wings, hairy body
3 vestigial wings, hairless body
1 vestigial wings, hairy body

So the ratio is 9:3:3:1.
This is the classic Mendelian dihybrid ratio.

F2:
9 Longwinged  & Hairless
3 Longwinged & Hairy
3 Vestigial Wings & Hairless
1 Vestigial Wings & Hairy

That is the answer and how to solve it. Hope it helped.
