People with multiple sclerosis develop areas in which the myelin sheath on their neurons has disintegrated. This disease often results in paralysis and extreme weakness. Using what you know about the myelin sheath, explain why these symptoms might occur.

The myelin sheath enables nerve conduction to occur at a much more rapid rate than without it; thus impulses travel more slowly to and from the brain, contributing to the symptoms.
