(5a-1)/3 = a + 2
5a - 1 = 3a + 6
5a = 3a + 7
2a = 7
a = 7/2

multiply both sides of the eqn by 3 to get
5a-1 = 3(a+2)

so
5a-1=3a+6   (by expanding the bracket)

then subtract 3a from both sides:
2a-1=6

then add 1 to both sides
2a=7

divide by 2:
a=3.5

the first thing to do with all algebra equations is to get rid of fractions because they're annoying, so multiplying both sides by three, we get
5a-1=3*(a+2)
simplify out the right hand side
5a-1=3a+6
now, take all the variables over to the left, all the constants over to the right, remembering that they 'switch signs' when going over the equals
5a-3a=6+1
simplify both sides
2a=7
dividing both sides by 2 to get the variable on it's own we get
a=7/2

so a is equal to 3.5

5a-1
------- = a + 2
3

Times Both sides by 3

5a - 1 = 3a + 6

Subtract 3a from both sides

2a - 1 = 6

Add 1 to both sides

2a = 7

Divide both sides by 2

a = 3.5
