What is a linked gene?

They are genes that do do not follow law of independent assortment. They are close together on same chromosome. so they are inherited together.

However, linked genes can separate due to crossing over in meiosis creating recombinant gametes. Recombinant gametes are those gametes that differ from both of the haploid gametes that made up the original diploid cell. For example, your mom is P r, and your dad is p R, the gamete comes up as p r.

Keep in mind that the crossing over frequency of linked genes is greater if genes are farther apart on the chromosome. The greater the distance between two genes on a chromosome, the more points there are between them where crossing over can occur. Percentage of recombinants varies depending on distance between genes.
