A 20 micro farad capacitor is connected in series to a 1000 ohm resistor.  If a 200V source is then connected across the combination (a) what is the initial current in the resistor, (b) the maximum charge on the capacitor, (c) the charge on the capacitor .85 seconds after the power source is connected?

a) Since an uncharged capacitor is like a short circuit, the initial current is just given by i = V/R = 200/1000 = 0.2 amps.

b)  When capacitor is fully charged you will have V = q/C or q = CV = 4 x 10^-3 coulombs.

c) Since RC = .02sec, at .85 sec the capacitor will be essentially fully charged and the charge will be 4 x 10^-3 coulombs.
