I had to answer a question that asked, what is the product when manganese is reacted with nitrogen gas?  I looked up the answer, which was Mn3N2.  Since both reactants have multiple oxidation states, how was I supposed to know the ratio in which they combine?

When in doubt, pick the most common one (listed first and usually the lowest number.

When in real doubt google it to see what the possibilities are.

If any doubt remains, guess or ask your teacher. If you have that much doubt, likely he/she will too. That's when you know you've reached your brown belt in Chemistry.
