While the vast majority of pregnant people—98.4%—give birth in a hospital, the percentage of pregnant people choosing to give birth outside of hospitals, either at home or in dedicated birthing facilities called birth centers, is growing.

In 2014, 94.2% of CNM/CM-attended births occurred in hospitals, while 3% occurred in freestanding birth centers, and 2.7% occurred in homes.
