Ecologists may use factoring polynomials to determine when species might become extinct.

Can you give me an example and explain how. please.

Basically, ecologists can construct population models- these are mathematical models that attempt to predict how many members of a species there are at a given time. Some of these models use polynomial equations. By solving the polynomial and finding out when it reaches zero, they can estimate when the species will die out.

Different terms in the equation often represent different influences on the species (food, predators, etc), which enable the ecologist to determine what will happen if conditions are changed.
