The term "cult" is often used to describe any group or organization that has a distinctive lifestyle and values that differ from the mainstream culture. When using the term, the image of handling snakes, worshipping devils, sacrificing virgins, or other bizarre practices come to mind. In reality, subcultures are simply different from the mainstream culture and are not necessarily threatening to it. But by calling them "cults," they are confused with organizations that do threaten the values of mainstream society.
