As you fatigue, the force exerted by your muscles decreases. What physiological processes explain this decline in strength?

1) You run out of energy molecules (ATP) or the precursors involved in the process of making those molecules (such as oxygen). This is why after you exercise your desire to breathe increases.

2) Harmful waste products (such as lactic acid) from using the energy molecules build up. Through feedback mechanisms, these waste products prevent further waste products from being generated (by halting the exertion).

Also, as you fatigue, less fibres can do work. The fast glycolytic fibres are the first to go. These are used for quick bursts , since these fatigue the fastest, one cannot keep sprinting full speed for a very long time. Then the fast oxidative fibres and slow oxidative. The slow oxidative fatigue very slowly, this explains why we don't get tired of standing or walking, or running long distances.
