The nurse is teaching a patient diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism secondary to renal failure about the patient’s new prescription for cinacalcet (Sensipar). The nurse knows the patient understands teaching regarding the medication when the patient states, “This medication works by
1. increasing the sensitivity of the calcium-sensing receptors of the parathyroid gland to serum calcium.”
2. blocking calcium receptors in the nervous system and musculoskeletal system.”
3. decreasing reabsorption of calcium in the distal renal tubule.”
4. binding calcium to bile salts that are then excreted through the GI tract.”

1 -- Cinacalcet (Sensipar) increases the sensitivity of the calcium-sensing receptors of the parathyroid gland to serum calcium. The effect is decreased secretion of PTH and reduced serum calcium and phosphorus. Options 2, 3, and 4 are incorrect.
