What is perhaps the most surprising characteristic of the sources of gamma ray bursts?

(a)   Their incredible intrinsic intensity, typically emitting in a second or two the amount of energy that the Sun will emit in its whole lifetime.
(b)   Their extremely rapid motion, as seen by the Doppler effect, shifting the wavelengths of the emitted gamma rays well away from the characteristic wavelength emitted by atomic nuclei.
(c)   Their repetitive nature, emitting very regular pulses of intense gamma rays over many weeks and months, presumably because of rotation of a very compact object.

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
