Acids are proton donators and can catalyze the hydrolysis of the glycosidic bond in polysaccharides like lactose, but could the same reaction occur in a basic solution?

Glycosidic bonds are ACETALS.  While hydrolyzed readily by acids, these are stable to bases.  In Organic Synthesis, acetals are common protecting groups in basic media.
