extracellular matrix is a sticky layer of glycoproteins that holds together cells and tissues. They also help regulate cell behavior and act as a buffer against stress.

if you could think of any analogies that'd be great

Using the cell as a city analogy, the extracellular matrix would be the outskirts of the city, or the UNDEVELOPED LAND adjacent to a city.  It could be parkland, wilderness, farmland, or simply wasteland.
