When negotiations break down, workers may decide to strike, or to stop working. If they walk outside the workplace carrying signs displaying their grievances, they are picketing. They may also boycott, in which unions and their supporters refuse to buy or handle the company's products or services in an effort to prompt management to accept union demands. A lockout is also possible. In a lockout, management refuses to allow union members to enter the premises. Lockouts are legal only if negotiations have come to an impasse and if the company is defending a legitimate position.
