HCO3- and CO32- are conjugate acid-base pairs. HCO3- is the acid because it donates a proton (H+) to the overall equation below and CO32- is the conjugate base because it has the ability to accept a proton (see the reverse equation).

HCO3- + H2O Rightwards Arrow H3O+ + CO32-
