31.9 mL x 3.5M / 173.6 mL = _ M

Let me give you a trick, in this kind of problems, you can use the equation M1V1=M2V2
M1=initial molarity ; V1=initial volume
M2=final molarity ; V2=final volume

Given:
M1= 3.5M
V1= 0.0319L (mL converted to L)
M2= unknown
V2= 0.1736L (mL converted to L)

Now:
M1V1 = M2V2
(3.5 M)(0.0319 L) = (x)( 0.1736 L)
x= (3.5 M)(0.0319 L) / ( 0.1736 L)
x= 0.643145161290322580645161290 32258 or 0.6M

Before dilution= 3.5 M
After dilution= 0.6 M
