1,2,3 -- Teaching for the man with prostatitis focuses on symptom management. Men with acute and chronic bacterial prostatitis should be taught to increase fluid intake to around 3 liters daily and to void often. Regular bowel movements help to ease pain associated with defecation. Local heat, such as sitz baths, may be helpful to relieve pain and irritation. Men with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome need to know that the condition is not contagious and does not cause cancer. It is important to teach the man to finish the course of antibiotic therapy.
