How is it exactly that Red blood cells eject there nucleus when forming?

Okay, so I'm learning about how blood is made and I have this question. I know that red and white blood cells are made from the same stem cell in marrow but how is it exactly that red blood cells know to eject there nucleus when forming and white blood cells do not? Is it a hormone or a protein? What controls this function?
