Why is having six fingers the dominant trait?

I need to know WHY it is dominant. We discussed this in Biology class and our teacher sad she would give extra credit if we could figure out WHY 6 fingers is a dominant trait.

My 2 cents on the subject:
Dominance is merely a definitional thing in reference to genetics. It means that you only need one allele with the instructions for the trait in order to express the trait. Any dominant trait will follow that trend... if one allele is present, it will be expressed. Recessive traits are those that need both alleles to say "recessive version" in order to be expressed.

it is rare and the body doesnt usually see it so if it is passed on that is domiate to have an extra finger

You might as well ask why a hair color or skin color is dominant. There is no good answer. Some will point to evolutionary trends. Some will point to history and culture.

Most cultures which had this trait were destroyed through war. Today it seems weird to us. This explains the rarity.

Dominance is another matter. It's genetics. Again, why are most people right-handed?
