The integumentary system has three basic layers. The epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. Histologically, the epidermis has five layers, the dermis has two layers and the hypodermis has (as far as I can tell) one layer comprised of loose connective fatty tissue. I don't think this layer is considered the actual skin but it is considered part of the integumentary system. That would be 8 layers total.

From Superficial to Deep:
Epidermis: (5 Layers)

Keratin: Superficial desquamating flakes (not sure if this counts as a layer, it may be part of the stratum corneum)

Stratum Corneum: the outermost layer. The cells in this layer are essentially bags of keratin. They contain no nuclei or organelles.

Stratum Lucidum: present only in thick skin.

Stratum Granulosum:  contains keratohyaline granules.

Stratum Spinosum: consists of a layer several cells deep. The cells have pointy or spiny processes on them.

Stratum Basale: contains the dividing cells. This layer is also called the stratum germinativum.

Pneumonic to help remember these layers:

Dermis:

Papillary Layer: loose and contains very fine interlacing collagen fibers. It contains venules, arterioles, capillary loops, lymphatics and Meissner's corpuscles (sensory nerve endings).

Reticular Layer: course, irregularly situated bundles of collagen containing the blood vessels that join the plexus of vessels in the papillary dermis with the larger, deeper vessels at the junction between the dermis and subcutis (hypodermis).

Hypodermis:
A layer of loose connctive tissue. It is where the hair follicles and sweat (merocrine) glands are rooted.
