1/2n = n + 4
n = 2(n + 4)
n = 2n + 8
n - 8 = 2n
-8 = 2n - n
-8 = n

1/2n = n+4

multiply both sides through by 2n the denominator (bottom) of the left side:

1 = 2n*(n+4)
1 = 2n^2+8n
0 = 2n^2+8n-1

use quadratic equation:

x = [ -8 +- sqrt(64-4(2)(-1)) ]/(2*2)
x = [ -8 +- sqrt(64+8) ]/(4)
x = [ -8 +- sqrt(72) ] / 4
x = [ -8 +- sqrt(36*2) ] / 4
x = [ -8 +- sqrt(36)*sqrt(2) ] / 4
x = [ -8 +- 6sqrt(2) ] / 4
x = [ -4 +- 3sqrt(2) ] / 2 SOLUTION

Let's multiply each side by 2 to get rid of the fraction.
2(1/2n)=2(n+4)
n=2n+8
Subtract n from each side.
0=n+8
n=-8
