A) The greatest free trade area exists among member nations of the European Union (EU), which is the oldest and largest free trade area. The EU can trace its roots to 1957 with the creation of the European Economic Community (or Common Market). Although many obstacles had to be overcome, like the concern over the potential loss of national sovereignty, the EU has grown to its current membership of 27 independent states.
