Advertising accounts for roughly 60% of newspaper space. The four areas of revenue are: general (national) advertising retail advertising, classified advertising, and preprinted inserts (retail flyer advertising). General or national advertising features products/services marketed on a national or regional basis.  Retail advertising is placed by department stores, supermarkets, drugstores and other large retailers. Classified advertising produces a significant amount of revenue. Classified ads provide readers with opportunities to acquire goods and services from a variety of sources, including other readers. Preprinted inserts are used by larger retailers and are commonly known as flyers. Seventy percent of Canadians list flyers as a major source of shopping information.
