A personal video recorder (PVR) allows consumers to digitally record and store their favourite shows for later viewing—a phenomenon referred to as video-on-demand. Commercials can be skipped in the recording process—a frightening thought for the networks and advertisers. Research studies from the United States reveal that early adopters of PVRs watch 70% playback of their television in one day, and they skip 90% of the ads in these programs. Such a high degree of skipping is a concern to advertisers. Ownership of PVRs is increasing in Canada. From an advertiser’s perspective, any form of commercial avoidance is a potential issue. To compensate, advertisers are looking at options such as product placement in shows, branded content, and sponsorship opportunities.
