• type of macronutrient (fat has least effect; protein has greatest)
• meal composition (consuming all three types of nutrients produces lower TEF)
• fiber content (high fiber meal produces lower TEF)
• age (TEF declines with age)
• environmental temperature (eating in a cold environment increases TEF)
• alcohol (increases TEF, unless consumed in a cold environment)
• intense exercise (raises TEF)
• training status (trained athletes have lower TEF)
• obesity (obese individuals have lower TEF than normal-weight individuals)
