As mining exposes rock walls to air, sulphide minerals in the rock react with oxygen from air and with water, forming sulphuric acid, which in turn reacts with iron, zinc, aluminum, manganese, nickel, cadmium, cobalt, arsenic, and copper to form soluble metal sulphates. High concentrations of these dissolved metals and low pH make the water toxic to wildlife.
