What purpose does cross-stringing the piano serve?
 
 

a. saves space
  b. allows some of the strings to continue to sound without the key being
  depressed
  c. creates a richer, more homogeneous sound
  d. keeps the instrument in tune for a longer period of time
  e. makes it more difficult for virtuosos to break strings when playing forcefully
