When blood pressure is low, the kidneys release an enzyme called renin. Renin, in turn, triggers the production of angiotensin II. As a result, angiotensin II triggers the release of aldosterone by the adrenal cortex. Aldosterone targets the kidney and promotes sodium reabsorption by the tubule cells of the kidney; water follows and is also reabsorbed when aldosterone is present in the kidney. The increased blood volume, due to water reabsorption, leads to increased blood pressure.
