Answer: The ideal answer should include:
a. Some colonies were established for commercial purposes (Virginia, Maryland, New York, Carolina).
b. Some colonies became havens for those fleeing religious persecution (Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts Bay Colony, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania).
c. Some colonies were founded by a sponsor (Maryland, Pennsylvania, Georgia)
d. Georgia was established as a colony for the English poor.
e. The creation of Georgia as a colony also blocked Spanish northern expansion.
