The bottom storey was rough-cut in order to imitate the walls of Roman ruins. Alberti uses the classical orders of columns (Doric/Tuscan, Ionic, Corinthian), and modeled the details of Palazzo Rucellai (Fig. 14.17) in reference to the Colosseum.
